Business Section
1. Business Section Affairs:
The Business Section of Kaohsiung Prison is intended to train its inmates to develop a professional skill, as well as to form the habit of industry, so that it will be easier for them to adapt to the society while making a living. In this way, there are fewer chances that they will commit second offense.
After inmates have come to the Prison, they will be classified and distributed to different workshops according to their individual education background, expertise, aptitude, interests, and metal condition.
Inmates’ workshop operations are divided into two types: Canvass Business (being entrusted by companies and enterprises to produce products) and Self-Run Business.

Canvass Business:
At present, there are 17 workshops in the Prison and 2,000 inmates who are operating in the workshops. What we are entrusted to produce include “toothpick packing,” “expansion bolts,” “paper tools,” “electronic components,” “wooden products,” “shoes,” “hand power pullers,” “curtain accessories,” “laundry and ironing,” etc.

Self-Run Business: Our self-run business includes “sewing section,” “carpentry section,” “plant cultivation section,” “food processing section,” and “artifact section.”
Sewing Section

At present, there are three sewing workshops, in which more than one hundred sewing machines are used by nearly three hundred inmates.

Photo Description: Inmates who are working in the sewing section come from two sources: (1) inmates who have completed the training program in making men’s clothing; (2) inmates who have already had experience and expertise in sewing before they come to the Prison. The latter are picked during investigation and classification and distributed to the sewing section later.

farm

Plant Cultivation Section
We have a farm of our own, in which inmates can choose to grow vegetables or other crops. We intend to assist our inmates in acquiring basic knowledge and skills that are required for agricultural production, as well as understanding the characteristics that are relevant to agriculture. Working in the farm not only allows inmates to receive a vocational education, but also helps them to cultivate the habit of being industrious and acquire a living skill.

Food Processing Section
To cultivate our inmates with practical living skills for their career after release, as well as to increase the repertoire of our self-run business, so as to augment our income and boost up the management performance, we have therefore set up the food processing section, with a special focus on the manufacture of “peanut candy.” To implement skill trainings and in coordination with our self-run business, inmates who have completed the training are required to manufacture peanut candies themselves for sale to gain practical experience, so as to implement the retraining policy. This is done also to promote our self-run business and to create the characteristics of the Prison

Meinung oilpaper umbrellas

Artifact Section
To help revitalize local traditional industry and preserve cultural heritage, as well as to help our inmates acquire a living skill, we have set up a skill training class of “Meinung oilpaper umbrellas.” An experienced master of Meinung oilpaper umbrellas is retained to teach our inmates this traditional craft. In coordination with our self-run business, inmates who have completed the training are required to participate in the production line to develop their skills. In this way, we can not only revive our local traditional industry and preserve our cultural heritage, but also promote the traditional craft of Meinung oilpaper umbrellas, so as to implement the “training-applying” policy.

  1. Revitalizing Traditional Technics:
In coordination with the policy of the Ministry of Justice, as well as to develop and revitalize our traditional industry and the culture of folk-custom that are fading away, we have therefore set up skill training classes for our inmates to learn traditional crafts (i.e., the making of Meinung oilpaper umbrellas and bamboo steamers), so as to equip themselves with the skills for the job of living when they are released.
